Australian Alpine FIS National and Junior Championships, Perisher Resort

Australian Alpine FIS National Championships and National Junior Championships, Perisher Resort

It’s been a busy week for  athletes across all ages this week with the SSA Children’s Carnival in Thredbo and the FIS Australian Alpine National Championships in Perisher.

SapphireOne HPC Team performed well in the Championships at Perisher Resort in a strong field including world number one for his age Norwegian Andreas Amdahl.

Australian National titles were taken out by:
Shaun Findlay – National Open GS winner (2nd overall to Andreas Amdahl), runner up Theo Coates (5th overall)
Theo Coates – National Junior GS winner (2nd overall to Andreas Amdahl), runner up Jack Adams (3rd overall)
Jack Adams – National Open and National Junior Slalom winner and overall champion Slalom

Impressive performances were also given by Connor Leggett who placed 4th overall in the National Junior GS Championships and 5th overall in the National Junior Slalom Championship.

At the National Championships, thanks to the great efforts of Perisher and SSA, the races were able to start at 7.45 each day, finishing by 11.30. This meant the resort was able to run two races (total 4 runs) each day compacting the race schedule from four days to two days. GS races were held Monday, Slalom Tuesday.

It was great to see so many first year FIS athletes with particular mention to Isabella Davis whose results included 4th in the National Junior Slalom and 5th in the National Champs Slalom, Tess Mahoney who placed 4th in the National Champs Slalom and Jasper Cobcroft whose best results included 6th in both National Championships GS and Slalom.

Following these races, the team athletes will have a couple of months off racing and training to focus on strength and conditioning before they start their Northern Hemisphere block with four weeks in China then on to Leogang, Austria.
